How to choose the right painting size for your wall

The most common mistake we see is art hung too small and too high. A painting is not an accessory to a wall — it is the anchor of the room, and it should feel like it belongs to the furniture beneath it.

Measure the width of your sofa, console or bed. Your artwork (or grouping) should cover about two-thirds of that width. For a 210 cm sofa, that means a canvas roughly 140 cm wide, or two 70 cm canvases hung 5 cm apart.

Height matters just as much. The centre of the piece should sit at eye level — about 145 cm from the floor — and no more than 20 cm above the back of the sofa. If in doubt, hang it lower than instinct suggests.

For narrow hallways and stairwells, go vertical. A tall, quiet composition draws the eye upward and makes a tight space feel considerably taller than it is.
