Caring for your canvas: five habits that add decades

Keep artwork out of direct sunlight. Even UV-resistant varnish will fade under hours of daily southern exposure — a metre off the sunbeam is usually enough.

Dust with a dry, soft brush every few months. Never use water, alcohol or household sprays on an unglazed painted surface.

Avoid hanging above active fireplaces, radiators or in bathrooms. Heat cycles and humidity swings loosen canvas tension over time.

If you need to store a piece, stand it upright, face-in, against a wall with a soft cloth between it and any surface. Never lay a stretched canvas flat under weight.

Every few years, re-tension the stretcher keys at the back corners if the canvas begins to slacken — a gentle tap is all it takes.
